Have you seen Episode 11: Cruising the West Coast of Michigan? Thought so. That’s probably why you’re here. In the video I make one of Kirk’s and my favorite childhood treats: Muddy Buddies, AKA Puppy Chow. We were both surprised at how many requests we received for the recipe — we thought it was a cross-country staple! Maybe it’s a Midwestern thing? Well who cares. Here’s the recipe — now you’re in the know!
This recipe is actually an official Chex Cereal recipe. I follow this recipe to a T, except I don’t use Chex, ha! I like to use Kellogg’s Crispix, because of the cereal’s lighter texture. Sorry, General Mills.
Both work great, though. Suppose you’ll just have to make it twice to find out which cereal you prefer. 😉
Muddy Buddies/Puppy Chow
Ingredients
9 cups Rice Chex™, Corn Chex™ or Chocolate Chex™ cereal (or combination) OR Kellogg’s Crispix
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Steps
- Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
- In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. OR, melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter on the stovetop. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.
- Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
