Savor the Last Sail – Ep. 52

With just a few days left before we haul the boat out for hurricane season, we sail as much as we can — even when the wind is so light we’re hardly moving at all — to savor our last moments on the water.

[Kirk] Welcome back to Sailing Soulianis. Last time, we left the Keys and began our journey north to Port Charlotte, where we plan to put the boat on the hard for hurricane season. We highlighted a few projects we needed to get done while hauled out, including a new bottom job and a real Bimini for our cockpit. Come along with us on our last few days sailing before we haul out.

We’re leaving Fort Myers for the last time. On our way up to Cayo Costa today, and we’re gonna spend a couple nights there at anchor, and then we are scheduled for haul out on Wednesday at JNR in Port Charlotte. So… Kirk’s gettin’ confident. There’s no way we he would’ve sailed this channel the first time we came in.

[Kirk] All right.

[Lauren] We finally got some wind in the last hour.

Now we’re movin’.

Now we’re movin’. This is one of our last sails for the season. We get hauled out three days from now, so…

So, we’ve been in the Boca Grande pass for like, the last three hours.

No, really?

I don’t know.

Like, an hour and a half. We’re going somewhere between zero and .8 knots.

We have a two knot head current. It was over two and a half a little while ago, and so we have eight knots of wind directly behind us, we’re sailing wing on wing, but sometimes we’re not moving forward. Sometimes we’re kinda just stopped, like right now. I mean, the water is rushing past our boat, there’s no doubt about that. We are just not rushing past anything. Trying to clean all our mold on our 37 foot sailboat with an inch long toothbrush.

[Lauren] Our headliner, it’s got this little bit of texture to it and so the only thing that actually gets in it is toothbrush bristles.

[Kirk] What are you hmming?

I gotta cut these into two. We’re each gettin’ three and a half eggs.

Whoa. That’s a lotta eggs.

Er, I’m sorry, we’re each getting one and a half eggs.

[Kirk] Oh, there you go.

You know, math.

[Kirk] Exactly over an oar, so that’s what I was wondering, because if there is more information like, if you do all this clearly, you need more than you can describe in a bullet. The other ones maybe not quite so much, but some of this stuff is just SEO or it’s just landing pages to capture on fail searches, but it will then redirect them to the right path, which is ultimately the join how. That is a piece of content that we don’t want on the home page at all.

[Lauren] Hey look it, that guy’s going fast.

[Kirk] Fuck off.

Yeah, we’re in seven feet of water like, right at high tide.

[Lauren] Wow. What are we going, what are we going through, love?

It’s a two foot high tide, so this would be pretty sketchy at low tide. We are going through the south Gulf Shore lock.

Which is a self-operating lock. That’ll be a first for us. ‘Sup, pelican?

[Kirk] Yeah, don’t step on that.

Oh my gosh, think I just burned the bottom of my foot right off.

Probably over 150 degrees.

Hey guys. Pull and hold chain until lock cracks.

Yeah, I did, and then what?

[Machine] Opening bay gate.

[Lauren] Oh.

Easy enough.

All right.

This is a tiny lock, man.

[Lauren] Yeah, ain’t no tow’s gonna fit through there, love.

[Machine] Wait until gates are fully open before entering lock.

Wow, we got a whole party here.

[Machine] Enter lock and hold onto lines, as water level will rise. Do not tie your boat to the wall.

[Kirk] The second or third one in, I want you clip that on.

All right.

Yeah.

Oh, he’s so little.

Yeah.

Awe.

Hey there, little guy.

[Lauren] Hi, buddy.

I wanna pet you.

Oh, you’re so little. It’s our first crocodile sighting. Alligator?

[Kirk] That’s why we need to repaint.

[Lauren] Love, who would have let your boat get like that?

Yeah, that’s pretty terrible. And this is when the paddle wheel to our knot log was blown off. If you have one, make sure to remove it before hauling out or immediately afterwards if you don’t have a plug to replace it with in the water. At the very least, make sure the boatyard knows about it and keeps the power washer away from it. It’ll save you a couple hundred dollars and an afternoon’s worth of work.

And our boat bottom was looking pretty, pretty scuzzy, actually, scuzzy’s not even the right word.

Yeah, I think it’s beyond scuzzy.

Yeah. It’s full of barnacles, I… In Key West, I probably took care of maybe a fifth of all the crap that was actually on here. Just a quick rundown of the last like, 12 hours.

This is my second time stepping in the well full of paint and barnacles and who knows what else. Ugh.

Hey, love birds. I’m gonna scare you away from trying to make a nest here. This has been the first full day on the hard so far, and in less than 12 hours, we’ve broken down and bought an air conditioner. Because it was brutal. We had one that came with the boat, but it is in Illinois at one of our rental properties, and we are in Florida, so that’s not very helpful at all. But, you do what you gotta do to stay productive, and tomorrow we’ve got a lot of work to do to get this boat ready to take off.
